Reset or change your Microsoft 365 password
Your Microsoft 365 password protects your email, files and Teams. This guide shows how to change it when you know it, reset it when you forgot it, and what to do afterward so your phone and computer keep working.
Change your password (you know your current one)
- Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with your work email.
- Select Password (or Change password).
- Enter your current password, then your new password twice.
- Select Submit.
You can also get there from any Microsoft 365 page (such as Outlook on the web): select your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner, choose View account, then Password.
Work account vs. personal account: account.microsoft.com is for personal Microsoft accounts (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Xbox). For your business email, use myaccount.microsoft.com.
Reset your password (you forgot it)
- Go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com, or select Forgot my password on the Microsoft sign-in page.
- Enter your work email address and the characters shown on screen, then select Next.
- Verify your identity using one of the methods you registered earlier, such as a code by text message, the Microsoft Authenticator app or an alternate email.
- Create your new password and confirm it.
Self-service reset only works if your organization has turned it on and you have registered your security info. You can review or add methods at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info. Doing this now, before you need it, saves time later.
If you are locked out
- Too many wrong attempts can temporarily lock your account. Wait a few minutes before trying again instead of guessing repeatedly.
- If the reset page says you cannot reset your own password, or you no longer have access to your phone or verification methods, your administrator needs to reset it for you. If Elite Tech Force manages your Microsoft 365, open a support ticket from another device or email address.
- Never share your password with anyone, including us. We do not need it to reset your account.
After you change or reset it
Your old password stops working everywhere. Expect to sign in again on:
- Your phone: Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and the built-in Mail app will ask for the new password. Enter it when prompted.
- Outlook on your computer: close and reopen Outlook, then sign in when asked.
- Your Windows computer: if you sign in to Windows with your work account, use the new password at the lock screen. Connect to the internet (office network or VPN if you use one) so the change syncs.
- Other devices: tablets, shared computers and printers or scanners that send email may also need updating.
Microsoft will never email you asking you to “confirm” or “update” your password through a link. If you get a message like that, do not click it. Go directly to myaccount.microsoft.com instead.
Tips for a strong password
- Use a passphrase of several unrelated words; longer is stronger.
- Do not reuse a password you use for any other website.
- Consider a reputable password manager to store it securely.
